During the coldest parts of winter, the last thing you want to deal with is a broken heating system in your home. Before your system mysteriously breaks down and leaves you in the cold, here are some early signs that you need to repair your home heating system.
Regular maintenance of your heating system may feel like a chore, but it is important for keeping your system running efficiently. Having your system serviced can actually save you money in the long run by keeping it clean and spotting potential issues before they become costly repairs.
One of the first signs that you need to service your home heating system is seeing a spike in your energy bill. If an increase in your energy bill is higher than an increase in electricity rates can account for, this is a sign that your heating system is using more energy than normal to heat your home. Excessive energy use means that your heating system is no longer working efficiently and may need to be serviced to save money.
If your heating system turns on and off too quickly, this could be a sign that something is wrong with your thermostat. This issue could be caused by several reasons and may require a fix as simple as replacing the batteries or, in some cases, replacing the thermostat.
If cold air is coming through registers and vents in your home when your heat is supposed to be on, this could be a sign that your furnace is not receiving power. First, check your home’s circuit breaker to ensure it receives electrical power. If the system is receiving power, it’s time to schedule service to determine why it is not working.
A heating system that blows little to no air may be dirty or have a part that needs to be replaced. Having your heating system serviced can easily resolve this issue, which usually involves cleaning part of your system or replacing worn parts to help it run more efficiently.
Several issues may cause leaks from your furnace, including clogged condensation tubing, breaks in the condensation line, or other possible issues with the pump. If you spot a leak, call for service immediately to avoid damage in your home caused by the leak.
If you hear a hissing sound coming from your furnace, this could mean that it is leaking gas into your home. Shut off your furnace and gas valve if you suspect gas leaks into your home, leave your house, and call for immediate service. Gas leaks can be dangerous for you, your family, and your pets and must be addressed ASAP.
A heating system that isn’t connected to a thermostat doesn’t know when to turn itself on or off, preventing you from adjusting it as needed. If your heating system has become disconnected from your thermostat, schedule a service to reconnect it.
All heating systems make some noise, but unusual or loud noises can cause concern. Most heating systems should be relatively quiet when turned on, so a loud system or strange noises need to be investigated, as most furnaces begin to get noisy as they break down.
Older heating systems are extremely inefficient, raising your heating bill. In addition, they are more prone to breaking down or having other issues. If your heating system is over 15 years old, it may be time to replace it.
